BARBARA BURGESS
Barbara has ben interested in the fine arts since she was a little girl. She loved to sing and draw. In junior highschool, her favorite thing was to copy other people's art and she was good at it. In high school, she changed her major from music to art. She then was taken under the wing of her art teacher and became his apprentis. She attended Kansas City Art Institute (a prestigous art college). After that, she got married and had children and her art fell to the wayside. Many years later, she became a nail technician and started painting tiny images on her client's nails. She then became a massage therapist and again, her art was left behind. When she moved to the Villages, she became interested in stamping and cardmaking. In 2011, Barbara was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. After having 2 stem cell transplants, she was introduced to Zentangle in the Arts in Medicine department at Moffitt Cancer Center where she was being treated. They told her that it would help to relieve her pain. She instantly fell in love with the entire Zentangle process and did as much research as she could find on the subject. She started tangling in a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" sketch book. She took her pens and book everywhere she went and would give the tiles to people whenever they admired her work. After taking a course with a CZT (2 years later), she decided that she would enjoy teaching it herself and went to Rhode Island where she learned from the founders of the Zentangle method. Barbara really enjoys teaching and especially loves to help others who need an outlet for pain relief and stress reduction.
